The Proposal
Short version (and just as romantic as the long version) – Ed and I were on vacation in Hawaii on the Big Island. We went walking on the beach after dinner one night, and underneath a thousand stars, he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him.
Long version (beware, I love to tell stories with lots of details!) – When Ed and I first planned our trip to Hawaii, I had a sneaking suspicion that he might propose while we were there. But, there were a few things that threw me off. First, Ed had told me a while back that he wanted the proposal to be a surprise. So, as you may know, Ed is a planner. Literally. So I couldn’t imagine how he could surprise me in Hawaii since Hawaii was my turf. I figured he had to do it while we were in California. Second, the only place I could imagine Ed proposing was at the volcanoes on the Big Island. That day on our vacation came and went.
But as we all know, it turns out that my initial suspicions were correct. Ed had wanted to ask my parents for permission in person, so he waited until we were in Hawaii. Unbeknownst to me, he had asked my parents for permission while I was taking a shower the first night of our vacation, and was just waiting for the right moment - kismet. The night after we hiked the volcano, we went to dinner with my parents. While we were at dinner, my mom referred to Ed as my fiancé to the waitress. I didn’t think anything of it at the time because my mom tends to switch words around. After pigging out (the food was so yummy!), Ed and I went walking along the beach in front of our hotel. We were the only ones out by the beach, and the night sky over the Hapuna Beach is breathtakingly beautiful because there are no city lights. The stars just sparkle and you can see thousands of them. I was paying attention to the waves, the stars, and the sand crabs, when Ed started asking me how I felt when my mom called me his fiancé. Then, all of a sudden, he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I was totally caught off guard. While I was standing there speechless, the tide started rising, and the waves washed up to where Ed was kneeling, and we had to grab our shoes and run further up the sand. It was all comical and lighthearted, like us. It was the perfect way to start the newest chapter of our lives.
Us being dorks and reenacting the proposal the next morning.
